Your loved one may feel isolated and alone with his or her CKD. You can help by tuning in, listening, talking, or just spending some quiet time together during the busy days ahead.

Tip: Treat Yourself to Health
|
When making your gift list and checking it twice, remember that you’ve been nice and deserve a treat, too. Why wait for someone else to give you what you really want? Pick up a copy of your favorite book, schedule a spa day, or plan a quiet lunch with an old friend. Whatever you do, make sure that you take time for yourself and rest. The holidays are when we forget the most important thing—our health.

And, remember, even though it’s a hectic time, don’t cheat yourself out of your treatment time. Maintain your dialysis schedule, and stay for the whole treatment. It’s a good time to make lists or write out those holiday cards. Talk with your doctor about other ways you can maintain your health and treatment for CKD.

Hidden Phosphorus in Meats
|
As a dialysis patient, you’ve likely been instructed by your doctor to eat foods high in protein and avoid those high in phosphorus. High phosphorus levels in your body can weaken your bones and your heart. Some food companies hide phosphorus in their meats, so extra care must be taken when shopping for meats when you’re on a dialysis diet.
