A Compassionate Patient Stays Active and Inspires Others

Manuel Ibarra, Fresenius Medical Care dialysis patient, enjoys fishing in his spare time.

Manuel Ibarra, a 59-year-old dialysis patient, grew up in a big family in Elsa, Texas, with four brothers and three sisters. Manuel was diagnosed with kidney failure last year and receives in-center hemodialysis at Fresenius Medical Care Weslaco.

It took Manuel a few weeks to get used to being on dialysis, but now he says he feels great and young again. Now Manuel helps motivate both patients and staff, and is a compassionate and positive role model.

Manuel and his wife have been married for 36 years and have two daughters, one son, and three grandchildren, with one more on the way. Manuel worked for 36 years as a route coordinator for bus services for the Edinburgh School District. Even as a retiree, Manuel and his wife remain very active in church and they jointly operate a woodworking business out of their home. Manuel cuts the wood and sands it, and his wife paints the pieces for décor. They own a motor home and often take short weekend trips. In Manuel’s spare time, he loves to fish, hunt deer and play golf.

This year Manuel plans to visit Seguin to visit his brother, who also recently started dialysis. Manuel would also like to go to San Antonio and on longer trips in the future by utilizing the Fresenius Medical Care Patient Travel Service.
