Singing Songs and Lifting Spirits, While Never Missing a Treatment

Fresenius Medical Care patient Francis Boeding enjoys spending his free time performing with his senior singing group, the Golden Tones.

Francis Boeding is a 61-year-old dialysis patient from Ham Lake, Minnesota who helps raise the spirits of everyone around him with his uplifting personality and golden singing voice. He has been on dialysis since July 2008 due to diabetes that led to kidney failure, and receives his hemodialysis treatments at the Fresenius Medical Care Coon Rapids dialysis facility.

Francis has always been committed to his dialysis treatments. In fact, he has never missed a treatment, and helps encourage other patients by explaining the importance of sticking to their treatment program, eating a healthy diet and getting a permanent fistula for dialysis access. With his bright and energetic personality, he enjoys visiting with other patients in his facility, and he's appointed himself the unofficial “entertainment director” at the clinic. He’s always happy to belt out a happy birthday song for fellow patients to help bring a smile to their faces. As part of the Golden Tones, a senior singing group, Francis also performs at senior centers throughout the community. When the holidays roll around, you can find him dressed up in festive outfits and singing his merry songs around the clinic.

In 2009, Francis suffered a setback when he had a fall that resulted in a brain injury, but through his determination was soon able to regain mobility and speech that had been lost. In fact, he says it was singing that helped him regain his speech.

An active member of his community, Francis enjoys planning and coordinating activities for a group of seniors in the neighborhood of his lake home in Mora, Minnesota. In Ham Lake, where he’s lived since 1981, Francis was president of the Chamber of Commerce. He is also a volunteer member and on the board of directors for Anoka’s community concert association, and as a member of the Lions Club in Cedar/East Bethel, he volunteers to sell tickets for rides and games at the annual Minnesota State Fair.
