Snowbird Retiree Stays Active Outdoors in Florida

Alex Stamatelos is an 83-year-old dialysis patient who lives in sunny St. Augustine, Florida. Alex has been receiving in-center hemodialysis treatment for the past four years. After losing one of his kidneys to cancer, his second kidney failed due to hypertension, causing him to require dialysis. Alex receives his treatments at Fresenius Medical Care St. Augustine, where his healthcare team of nurses, doctors, dietitians and social workers encourages him to maintain an active lifestyle.

Alex retired from federal government service in 1986 and moved to St. Augustine with his wife in 1993 after working 8 years in the private sector. Staying active is very important to Alex and the warm Florida weather allows him to spend almost every day exercising outside. Alex goes on daily walks and also plays weekly golf games. He also enjoys swimming and biking.

“Exercise is a big part of my lifestyle, and helps keep me physically and mentally fit,” he says.

Frequent exercise also helps Alex keep up with his five grandchildren. Alex’s children and grandchildren still live in his home state of New Jersey and he visits them a few times a year. Alex works with Fresenius Medical Care’s Patient Travel Service to arrange his treatments in New Jersey while he travels.

When encouraging other dialysis patients to stay fit, Alex recognizes it’s important to know your limits when starting an exercise routine.

“Do as much as you can regularly,” he says, “and slowly build up from there.”
